Encountering Trauma
Founder of the Assisi Institute Michael Conforti mentioned in a recent interview, that Elie Wiesel's novel titled "The Accident" was the best book he ever read. Michael was speaking with Depth Psychology Alliance founder Bonnie Bright.
I subsequently read this short novel. Wiesel describes an experience of trauma that is so deep, that it hijacks one's very soul. I recommend it to anyone who is working with people for whom cataclysm has deconstructed all that they are, and all that weaves them together as human beings. This story, as well as Michael's work, may prevent all of us from unwittingly marginalizing their suffering. It may stop us from suggesting that they "get on" (move forward) with their lives and encourage us instead, as therapists, family members, or friends, to walk with them for a time, listening, and perhaps offering our presence as a container for some of their suffering. Their own souls' momentum will offer a new path as they are ready to go on. That healing path, coming from an authentic intelligence within the client's center, can surely be encouraged.
